"Smithville’s version of the Oscars"
Congratulations to our award winners!
This year's banquet was all about volunteerism, and the great works done by people to enhance this community through their time and efforts. A special commendation was given to the firemen and those who worked during the Wilderness Ridge Fire last year at this time, and Paul Martz spoke on volunteerism and how it changes lives. During the delicious dinner by Catering by Chabot, the Academy Jazz Players were on the stage with a lively set of music.
The awards continued in the volunteerism vein. Congratulations to Carol Snyder, our 2009 Citizen of the Year, a great volunteer in so many areas of the community; our Organization of the Year, the Community Gardens; and to our 2009 Business/Employer of the Year, LiveAir Networks.
2009 Citizen of the Year

This year’s Citizen of the Year, Carol Phillips Snyder, is someone that very quickly established roots in Smithville – roots probably as deep as our stately oak trees. Perhaps considered a “big city kid” based on a list of previous hometowns, our Citizen’s heart and soul could not be more committed to our small town values and way of life.
The participation in community activities are so widespread that one risks leaving out some of the contributions. This person is known for picking up the small tasks that are needed as well as carrying on their shoulders along with many of the giant ones.
Carol Ann Phillips Snyder, a retired information systems consultant, mother, grandmother and loving wife has served our community tirelessly. The following are just some of the activities and organizations that have benefited from her efforts, her concern, her passion and her love.
Smithville Public Library: Served on the Advisory Board for at least two terms as well as holding one or more offices.
Friends of the Smithville Public Library: As a longtime member of the Friends she has served as President and Secretary. She has organized the Friend’s Bake Sale and Book Sale and continues to assist the current chairs of these events twice a year. In additions she ensures the success of these events by producing flyers and sending publicity to area newspapers as the Friends Public Relations guru.
Smithville Heritage Society: A longtime member and currently President of the Board she organizes meetings, negotiated the use of the Heritage Society House for the production office for the “Tree of Life” movie, serves as primary contact person for Society activities and events and has helped coordinate the digital scanning of Society photographs and documents in cooperation with the Friends of the Library Digitization Project. Carol will also search tirelessly for the information, picture or location requested by someone trying to do research in Smithville’s history, either for personal use or for a commercial project such as The History Channel.
Smithville Walking and Driving Tours: Carol was a principal coordinator and author of the walking and driving tours developed with grant support – which she was largely responsible for securing. The grant also provided funds for Smithville signage on Highway 71, but Carol also then helped secure local support with matching funds.
